A Good WW1 1915 Star Medal Trio Gallantry 'Battle of Vittoria Veneto' M.I.D. awarded to 10254 Sgt W.J. Anderson, 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.

William J Anderson was born during 1896 at Plymouth, Devon. He joined the ranks of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, landing in France on the 25th of July, 1915. They were in action at the Battle of Loos, the Battles of the Somme, including the capture of Mametz, the Battle of Bazentin, the attacks on High Wood, the Battle of Delville Wood, the Battle of Guilemont, the operations on the Ancre, the 3rd Battle of Ypres, the Battle of Polygon Wood, the Battle of Broodseinde, Battle of Poelcapelle, and the 2nd Battle of Passchendaele.

During late 1917, the battle hardened battalion, as part of the 7th Division, was selected to move to Italy. There they took up positions in the line along the River Piave in late January 1918. The Division played a central role in crossing the Piave and then in October they fought at the Battle of Vittoria Veneto, where it believed Anderson was ‘Mentioned’ in General Earl’s Dispatches for ‘distinguished and gallant services, and devotion to duty’ - London Gazette, 3rd of June, 1919, refers.
