A WW1 Royal Navy L.S.&G.C. Medal Group awarded to 270689 C.E.R.A. 2nd Class Alfred Royal.

Alfred Royal was born at Jarrow, County Durham, on the 3rd of February 1876. He worked as a boiler maker prior to joining the ranks of the Royal Navy on the 9th of June 1902.

During his Royal Naval service, he served aboard a wide variety of ships and land bases -

H.M.S. Pembroke II, Sutlej, Berwick, Tenedos, Wildfire, Blenheim, Charydbis, Astraea, Albion, Cressy, Blonde, Tyne, Montrose, & Vindictive.

Alfred spent the bulk of WW1 serving aboard the scout cruiser H.M.S. Blonde which didn’t see any action, bar an accident. On the 11th of January 1916, just off Scapa Flow, a depth charge aboard Blonde accidentally expolded, damaging the upper deck and killing two members of the crew. This incident resulted in the ‘Egerton depth charge’ being withdrawn from service.
