John Edward Davies was born on the 11th February, 1880, at Leominster, Herefordshire. He joined the ranks of the Royal Navy on 16th April 1901 and the Royal Fleet Reserve on the 7th August 1913. During WW1 Davies served aboard the Diadem-class cruiser H.M.S. Argonaut 2.8.1914 - 12.9.15, and was present when she captured the German merchant ship Graecia and then served aboard the Monmouth-class armoured cruiser H.M.S. Berwick 17.6.16 - 19.8.18
