A WW1 'Old Contemptables', W.I.A 1914 Star Medal Trio awarded to 41580 Driver Robert Brown, 30th (Howitzer) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.

Robert Brown, from Ashford, Kent, was born circa 1885 and joined the ranks of the Royal Artillery upon the outbreak of WW1, disembarking France on the 19th of August, 1914, with the 30th (Howitzer) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.

The 30th (Howitzer) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, comprised the 128th, 129th 130th (Howitzer) Batteries, serving with the 3rd Division and proceeded to France in August 1914. They saw action at the Battle of Mons and the rearguard action at Solesmes, the Battle of Le Cateau, the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of Aisne, La Basse, Messines and the 1st Battle of Ypres. They took part in the winter operations of 1914/1915. They took part in the 1st attack on Bellewaarde and the actions at Hooge. In May 1915, 128th (Howitzer) Battery left the Brigade and on the 14th of May 1916, the 30th (Howitzer) Brigade was broken up.

On the 9th of November, 1917, Robert was wounded, suffering gun shot wounds to his lower left and right thighs (possible machine gun fire), the War Office Daily List No. 5412 refers, and his medical records show that he was admitted to the Catterick Military Hospital on the 18th of December, 1917
