Albert Ogilvy Cathrew was born during 1891, at Dundee, Forfarshire.

He joined the ranks of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, enlisting at Dumbarton, and serving with the 11th Battalion on the Western Front.

On the 22nd August, 1917, during the 3rd Battle of Ypres, Pte Cathrew, and the 11th Battalion were involved in the attack on the River Steenbeke, between Zomebeke and St. Julian. The objective, at 04.45, was to to capture and hold Beck House and Borry Farm, to the left of the Mennin Road. Due to severe machine gun fire, the attack’s progress was slowed down at times, coupled with accurate sniper bullets finding there targets and accurate bombing, serious casualties were inflicted upon the 11th Battalion. The ground was eventually taken, but not held for very long. Pte Albert Cathrew was one of many soldiers killed during the ill fated attack.

Pte Albert Ogilvy Cathrews’ body was never recovered and he is remembered, with honour, on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
