Having obtained a copy of his service records and carried out further research on a Lieutenant in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, I found out that he was blind in one eye prior to enlisting, which he did not divulge when he joined the Army (someone had thrown a stone at him when he was a child and it hit him straight in the eye). This became a problem after a year in the trenches when he was gassed. The effects of the gas caused ongoing infections in this eye and he was given a medical discharge and subsequently had the remains of the eye removed. On his return to England it took over 10 months to privately source a prosthetic eye.
